Tree Seed Services
Millson Forestry Service has a seed extraction plant that has been in operation since April 1996. The plant offers seed extraction (from cones), cleaning, testing (to ISTA standards), and storage. The bulk of the species handled are conifer with a minor component of native shrubs and herbs. Inventory tracking is an important aspect of our seed processing services to ensure that the details of seed source and ownership track with each seedlot through the various processes in our facility. A bar code is attached to the collection as it enters our facility and follows the seeds through to it’s storage container in our freezers.
Seeds are stored in 4 large walk-in freezers that are connected to a back-up generator in the event of a power outage. Clients have the option to have seed stored at -7C and -18C. The freezer are also equipped with alarms to ensure temperatures remain in the appropriate range.
Due to the gentle nature of our seed extraction process, the resulting open cones are of merchantable quality for arts and craft purposes. Currently our cones are sold across Canada and the United States for this purpose. Please contact our office if you are interested in purchasing empty cones.
