- Waste Reduction: We firmly believe in the 5 Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle.” Our waste reduction initiatives play a crucial role in minimizing our environmental footprint. Every effort is made to reuse and repurpose components in our operations. Through our comprehensive recycling program, we ensure that paper, plastic, aluminum, and steel are recycled properly, diverting these materials from landfills. Moreover, our active composting piles are dedicated to recycling leftover planting mediums and greenhouse waste, enriching the soil and closing the loop on organic matter.
- Wood Heating: To further demonstrate our commitment to sustainability, we’ve been utilizing a wood heating system that utilizes wood waste from a local sawmill as our primary heat source for the last 40 years. Unlike fossil fuels, wood is a renewable resource that helps reduce our reliance on non-renewable energy sources. By burning wood waste, we contribute no net increase in carbon dioxide, as this process mirrors the natural plant-growth cycle where carbon dioxide is released during decomposition. Our wood heating system is a testament to our dedication to combat climate change and minimize our carbon footprint.
- Reusable Boxes and Trays: In our efforts to foster a circular economy, we use reusable plastic trays and boxes during the cultivation and packaging of our seedlings. These durable containers are designed for multi-year use, significantly reducing the generation of single-use plastics. Between crop cycles, we thoroughly sanitize these containers through a steaming process, ensuring their cleanliness and integrity for the next planting season.
