How to Plant a Tree
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” – Chinese Proverb
Planting a tree seedling is a simple and rewarding way to help the environment and make a positive impact on the world. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to plant a tree seedling, so you can watch it grow and thrive.
Step 1: Choose the right species for the location. The first step in planting a tree seedling is choosing the right location. Look for a spot that has enough space for the tree to grow to its full size. Make sure the area is free from underground utilities or pipes, and avoid planting near buildings or other structures. Once the location has been selected choose a species that suitable for the soil, moisture and sun/shade conditions
Step 2: Dig the hole. Dig a hole that is slightly wider and deeper than the root ball of your seedling. The hole should be deep enough so that the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil.
Step 3: Prepare the soil. Loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole and mix in some compost or other organic matter. This will help improve soil drainage and provide nutrients for the young tree.
Step 4: Plant the seedling. Carefully remove the tree seedling from its container and gently loosen any tangled or circling roots. Place the seedling in the center of the hole and backfill with soil, making sure to tamp it down lightly to remove air pockets.
Step 5: Water and mulch. Water the tree thoroughly, making sure the soil around the roots is moist. Then, add a layer of mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture and keep weeds at bay.
Step 6: Care for the tree. After planting, be sure to water the tree. If conditions are dry regular watering may be required for at least the first season until roots become well established.
